Instructions – Booklet

Start with PDF files from the cards (InDesign) and the explanatory text (Word).

Create ISBN if necessary

Create 6 cards per standard page version of cards

    The PDF of the cards from InDesign will be on 2.5x3.5" pages.
    It will be really handy if there's a multiple of 12 cards, so that the 3x4 version (6 cards per page) will wind up filling an even-numbered page.  If not, then some juggling may be required in the merger with the other file.
    Open that PDF in Acrobat and print them 4 across (front and back of 2 cards) and3 high on 8.5x11 pages.  Call this the 3x4 version

Edit the explanatory text

    Remember to update the ISBN if necessary and install on copyright page and lower right of outside back cover
    The front material should cover an even number of pages.  If not, some juggling may be required.  Ditto the back material (references)
    Print to PDF

Merge the 3×4 version of cards with explanatory text.

    Open both files in Acrobat
    Choose "merge" and select both files.
    In the merged version, select "organize pages"
    Move the back part of the explanatory file (the references) to the end,after the card images.  Ideally there will be an even number of front pages, an even number of card pages (multiples of 12 cards), and an even number of back material (references).   In the less-than ideal case two of these will have odd numbers of pages, so the back material winds up on the back cover.  In the non-ideal case there will be an odd number of pages.  If this happens, the ISBN bar code still needs to be on the back cover.  So add a page at the end and put the ISBN code on that page. 
    Save the result as the combined document.  This will be the 8.5x11: loose-page version distributed on the web.
    Print it to PSF as a booklet.   Acrobat should do the right thing, producing another PDF that makes up to a booklet if you print with duplex printing and you remember to set "flip on short edge"
